Conception may, sometimes, cause stress for couples. Today, the underlying reason is difficulty in conception in one out of every 7 women.

Prefer these foods if you plan pregnancy

Having a child is a great desire for many couples. A new life arising out of the love adds many values to the life. Although it seems a natural and simple process, it may not, sometimes, be too easy to achieve conception. Particularly, many conditions of modern era may hinder pregnancy. Scientific data suggests that one out of every 7 women faces difficulty in conception and it is estimated that the figure will increase two folds in the near future due to incorrect lifestyle and eating habits, such as obesity, smoking, alcohol and heavy consumption of coffee. These factors have adverse effects on number and quality of eggs. The good news for couples is to increase the chance of pregnancy through healthy and correct eating along with medical treatments, although it is not possible to manipulate age and genetic factors that are regarded among causes of infertility.

Studies conducted by Harvard University and Cleveland Clinic report that correct eating and modification of lifestyle can increase the chance of conception in women by 70 percent. Health and balanced diet is primarily required for increasing quality and number of eggs. It is very important to eat foods that contain especially folic acid, Omega 3 and Vitamins A, D and E as well as zinc and selenium regularly. These substances are found abundantly in foods that we usually consume, such as grains, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as dried nuts and fruits.


Leafy green vegetables: Spinach, chard and other leafy dark green vegetables increase quality of eggs, as they are rich in folic acid. Moreover, they decrease the risk of miscarriages secondary to genetic anomalies.

Broccoli: it is rich in vitamin C and folic acid that are vitally important for ovulation. It is reported that Vitamin C decreases the risk of luteal phase deficiency by helping entry of progesterone into the cell.

Brussels sprouts: Since Brussels sprout is rich in folic acid, it helps implantation of the fertilized egg.

Cabbage: Cabbage is rich in di-indol methane. This substance is protective against myoma and endometriosis that are among common causes of infertility.

Potato: It is rich in Vitamin C and helps women with luteal phase deficiency.

Carrot: Carrot is rich in beta-carotene and it not only boosts ovulation, but it also decreases the risk of miscarriage.


Pomegranate: Abundant amount of Vitamin C facilitates flux of progesterone into the cell and helps preparation of the endometrium – the innermost layer of uterus – for the implantation of fertilized egg. Moreover, it increases the sexual appetite.

Avocado: this fruit is rich in folic acid, Vitamin E, unsaturated fatty acids and minerals. Vitamin E helps implantation of the fertilized egg into uterine wall by contributing to maturation of the endometrium – the innermost layer of uterus.

Banana: It is a fruit that is rich in vitamin B6 and potassium. It increases quality of the egg.

Red fruits (mulberry, raspberry, and bilberry): Red fruits contain Vitamin C and folic acid abundantly and reduce the risk of luteal phase deficiency by facilitating intracellular flux of progesterone.

Animal proteins

Fat-free meat (chicken, red meat): they are rich in iron and essential fatty acids. Iron deficiency may affect production of egg and ovulation adversely in women. It is necessary to consume twice a week.

Egg: they are rich in Vitamin D, choline, omega-3 and folic acid. These ingredients help cope with fertilization problems secondary to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and benign tumors, such as myoma. It increases quality of the egg. One should eat 1 or 2 eggs in different forms.

Shellfish (shrimp, clam etc.): these sea products are rich in Vitamin B12 and they help implantation of the fertilized egg.

Salmon: Salmon is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and it increases quality of eggs.

Milk and dairy products

Milk and yoghurt are perfect sources of calcium, Vitamin D and probiotic and they help elimination of fertilization problems such as to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and benign tumors, such as myoma.


Turmeric: Turmeric is rich in antioxidants, such as Vitamins C and E as well as folic acid, beta carotene and lutein and increases fertility by preventing menstrual disorder. Antioxidants increase quality of eggs by activating harmful free radicals that are produced in body.

Garlic: It is rich in antioxidants and selenium. Selenium increases quality of the egg.

Fats and oily seeds

Olive oil: it contains unsaturated fatty acids with antioxidant activity abundantly. It increased the fertility in women by reducing the insulin resistance.

Pumpkin seed and sunflower seed: they are very rich in zinc that is required for a healthy reproductive system. Zinc increases blood supply to reproductive organs through its antioxidative effect.

Flaxseed: it is rich in omega-3 and lignin. Lignin increased fertility by making contributions to reduction of the myoma’s size. Omega-3 fatty acids play a role in implantation and maintenance of pregnancy by reducing cellular destruction through its antioxidative effects and increasing the blood supply to uterus.

Dried nuts and fruits

Almond: it increases quality of egg, as it contains Vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids.

Walnut: walnut is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and fiber and its antioxidative effects increase quality of eggs.

Dry legumes

Lentil and white bean: they are rich in herbal protein, fiber and vitamin B. These ingredients increase rates of ovulation and reduce the risk of miscarriage.
