Want to Boost Your Immunity? Activate NK Cell

Many researchers have actively studied on improving immunity by activating immune cells such as T, B, macrophage and natural killer (NK) cells. Among them, NK cells attack and kill virus-infected cells, tumor cells, bacteria and other abnormal cells which are most active in people aged 20. Their activity halves in people aged 60 and decreases to one third in those aged 80. This is why you become more susceptible to diseases as you age.

 

If you get tired easily and sick often, your immune system may be weakened. To boost your immunity, it is recommended to take some supplements. One of them is poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) that is patented in Korea and Japan. A research team of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital found in study that 99 research participants showed 52.3% increase of NK cell activation after they took γ-PGA for 8 weeks.

 

Immune system defends our body from foreign invaders that enter the body through the skin, digestive and respiratory system, and naturally heals the body. When the immune system is not working properly, the body becomes vulnerable to infectious viruses and diseases.

 

The immune system is suppressed during the winter because your skin, muscles, autonomic nervous system, and other organs use more energy to maintain body temperature. As a result, relatively less energy is allocated to immune cells.

 

There are some signs of fragile immune system. You become susceptible to common colds with lingering symptoms, develop inflammations, and often have stomachache since the immune response against bacteria becomes weak. Shingles (herpes zoster) that often occurs among people in their 50s or older develops when your immune system is fragile. That is why the elderly need to take good care of their health in the winter.

 

Toxic particulate matter also affects the immune system. Numerous studies indicate that high concentration levels of harmful particulate matter can increase the risk of developing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases including stroke. When yellow dust, particulate matter and toxic materials enter the body in large amount, active oxygen is produced excessively. Active oxygen attacks cell membrane and DNA, causing cell damage or mutation.

 

If you want to boost your immune system, take enough water and nutrition. When you go out in the winter, dress warmly to maintain your body temperature. Low humidity dries out the mucous membrane lining the respiratory tract, making it vulnerable to viruses. Therefore, it is recommended to keep indoor humidity levels between 40 to 50%.
