Chew Min Hoe

Dr. Chew Min Hoe is a Senior Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon who specializes in General and Colorectal Surgery. He has special interests in colorectal cancer, advanced pelvic tumors, hereditary conditions as well as perianal surgery. Dr. Chew has expertise in treating a wide range of benign and cancerous diseases of the colon, and is skilled in minimally invasive techniques. He also has special interest in treating complex locally advanced pelvic cancers as well as genetic hereditary colorectal conditions.

Prior to private practice, Dr. Chew served in the public sector for more than 20 years and was the founding Head of Department of Surgery in Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) from July 2016 to June 2020. He was subsequently promoted to Chairman, Division of Surgery in July 2020. Dr. Chew held various key administrative positions in SingHealth and Sengkang General Hospital such as Vice Chairman of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development of the Academic Medicine Council for Surgery, Director of the Operating Theatre Management Unit and Endoscopy Centre. He has also been in the EXCO committee of Society of Colorectal Surgeons in 2012-2015 and was recently awarded with The Public Administration Medal (Bronze), National Day Awards, 2020.

Dr. Chew graduated from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2001. Upon his graduation, he went on to obtain his Master of Medicine in Surgery from NUS in 2006 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010. He has subspecialized in Colorectal Surgery since he completed his General Surgery training. He was awarded the Singhealth Human Manpower Development Plan Award to pursue further training in complex pelvic surgery and completed his fellowship in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia in 2012.

Apart from clinical work, Dr. Chew has also contributed significantly to the medical field through teaching and research. Dr. Chew held concurrent appointments of Adjunct Associate Professor with NUS’ Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Adjunct Associate Professor with the Duke-NUS Medical School, as well as Nanyang Technological University's Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He has been an active educator and has won numerous teaching awards including the Singhealth Outstanding Young Educator Golden Apple Award in 2013.

Dr. Chew has authored more than 100 peer reviewed publications, and was involved in many research grants. He has also been invited as guest speaker in numerous international conferences and participated in various international consortiums.

During his tenure in public service, Dr. Chew juggled numerous duties and performed complex operations for which the longest has been up to 36 hours. He had also managed and handled large teams of clinicians, administrative and nursing staff. He has had extensive experience designing and leading quality improvement projects, handling and working out crisis, as well as working with his department leaders to boost morale and confidence of his staff members.

Dr Chew's specialty interests are advanced pelvic tumors and pelvic exenterations, colorectal surgery for the elderly, general and colorectal surgery, hereditary colorectal conditions, laparoscopic/minimally invasive surery and perianal surgery.
