TOP MEDICAL SPECIALITIES OFFERED BY APOLLO HOSPITALS, GREAMS ROAD, CHENNAI · Hysterectomy · Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair · Anal Fissure Treatment • HYSTERECTOMY Hysterectomy is a procedure that is used to surgically remove a female’s uterus. Your doctor may suggest a hysterectomy if you have uncontrollable vaginal bleeding, long-term pelvic pain, or cancer of the uterus, cervix, and ovaries. Hysterectomy is also indicated if you have fibroids, a type of benign tumor of the uterus, or pelvic inflammatory disease, a serious infection of the reproductive organs. Some other conditions in which your doctor might suggest hysterectomy include: • UTERINE PROLAPSE: A condition in which the uterus drops through the cervix and protrudes from the vagina. • ENDOMETRIOSIS: A disorder in which the inside lining of the uterus grows elsewhere in the body, causing pain and bleeding. There are different types of hysterectomy such as: • PARTIAL HYSTERECTOMY: when your doctor removes only a portion of your uterus. • TOTAL HYSTERECTOMY: when your doctor removes the entire uterus, including the cervix. • HYSTERECTOMY AND SALPINGO-OOPHORECTOMY: when your doctor removes the uterus along with one or both of your ovaries and fallopian tubes. At Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, hysterectomy can be performed in several ways. Before the surgery, your doctor will book an appointment with you in which he or she will assess your health. The doctor will then decide which hysterectomy type and method will be best for you. If you are undergoing an abdominal hysterectomy, your doctor will remove your uterus through a cut in your abdomen. If you are undergoing a vaginal hysterectomy, your uterus is removed through a small incision made inside the vagina. If you choose a laparoscopic hysterectomy, your doctor uses a tiny instrument called a laparoscope which is a thin tube with a high-resolution camera at the front. The instrument is inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Once the surgeon can see your uterus, they will remove it by cutting it into small pieces and removing it one piece at a time. After your hysterectomy, you’ll need to stay in the hospital for 2 to 5 days, where the doctor will monitor your condition. Once you are discharged from the hospital, you will be called for regular follow-ups. • LAPAROSCOPIC INGUINAL HERNIA REPAIR An inguinal hernia occurs when organs or tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes from a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. There are different types of inguinal hernia repair procedures, one of which is laparoscopic repair. This procedure requires the laparoscope, which is an instrument with a thin telescope-like camera with a light at the end. The advantage of laparoscopic surgery includes tiny cuts on the abdomen instead of one larger incision, which leads to decreased pain after surgery and shorter recovery time. At Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai, your surgeon will schedule an appointment with you before the procedure. He or she will evaluate your general state of health by asking you questions related to your health, performing a physical exam, send lab work, and get an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart. On the day of the procedure, after you get general anesthesia, the surgeon will make a few minute incisions into the abdominal wall. He or she will then pass the laparoscope and the surgical instruments through the incision into the abdomen. The hernia defect may then be covered by a mesh from within the abdomen, which is held in place with the help of staples that are put into the muscle tissue to fix the defect. Once the hernia defect is repaired, the incisions are closed, and you are shifted to a recovery room. The patient may be sent home when the surgeon thinks they are fit to go. After discharge, your surgeon will follow up with you in the clinic and make sure you are doing well and not developing any complications. • ANAL FISSURE TREATMENT An anal fissure is a tear in the thin lining of the anus. An anal fissure may occur if you have constipation and pass hard or large stools during a bowel movement. Some other causes of anal fissures include chronic diarrhea, anal cancer, tuberculosis, syphilis, anal intercourse, and childbirth. An individual with an anal fissure is likely to experience pain during bowel movements that can last up to several hours. They may also notice bright red blood on the stool or toilet paper after a bowel movement. The doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai are experienced and well trained to treat anal fissures. On the day of your appointment, your surgeon will ask you questions related to your medical history and perform a physical exam, including an examination of your anal region. The doctor can often see the tear in the anal examination, and in such a case, the examination is all that is needed to diagnose an anal fissure. Some other tests that may be recommended by the doctor including anoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy. After thoroughly assessing your condition, your surgeon can advise non-surgical treatments or surgical treatments depending upon your condition. Your doctor might recommend simple treatments, such as increased fiber intake or sitz baths. If your anal fissure does not improve with the simple treatment regimen, or if you have severe symptoms, your doctor may recommend medication or, occasionally, surgery.
