TOP SPECIALITIES OFFERED AT NARAYANA MULTISPECIALITY HOSPITAL, HSR LAYOUT · Carotid Endarterectomy · Coronary Angiography · Crohn’s Disease Treatment • CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure to treat carotid artery disease. The carotid arteries are the main blood vessels that carry oxygen and blood to the brain. In carotid artery disease, the arteries become narrowed and lead to decreased blood flow to the brain, which causes a stroke. At Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, HSR Layout, your doctor will review your history and perform a physical exam to make sure you are fit for the procedure. The doctor may also order some blood and diagnostic tests. At the first appointment, the doctor will also explain the procedure to you. On the day of the procedure, you will be given anesthesia. You may be given local anesthesia in which you are awake but feel no pain, or you may be given general anesthesia, which will help you sleep. Your doctor will then start the procedure to surgically remove any plaque build-up inside the carotid artery. The doctor will cut the side of your neck to open the carotid artery. After opening the carotid artery, he or she will then remove the plaque and stitch the artery back together. This will restore the normal blood flow to the brain. After your surgery, your doctor will move you to a recovery room followed by your inpatient room in the hospital, where you might have to stay for a day or two. • CORONARY ANGIOGRAPHY Coronary angiography is an investigative procedure that uses a dye and x-rays to see how the blood is flowing through the arteries in your heart. This procedure is often done with cardiac catheterization, which measures the pressures in the heart chambers. Your doctor at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, HSR Layout, may recommend that you have a coronary angiogram if you have any symptoms of coronary artery disease, such as chest pain, a congenital heart defect, and abnormal results on a noninvasive stress test of the heart or a heart valve problem that requires surgery. Before starting your procedure, your doctor will give you anesthesia to help you relax. The cardiologist will then pass a catheter which is a thin hollow tube, through an artery in your groin or arm and move it up to your heart. Once the catheter is in the right place, a dye will be injected into the catheter. X-ray images will follow this to see how the dye moves up the artery and highlight any blood flow block. This whole procedure might take around 30 to 60 minutes. Once the angiogram is over, your cardiologist will remove the catheter and close the incision with manual pressure. After completing the procedure, the doctor will shift you to a recovery area for monitoring. When your condition becomes stable, you will be moved back to your hospital room. You may be discharged to go home the same day or advised to remain in the hospital for one night, depending on your condition. • CROHN’S DISEASE TREATMENT Crohn's disease is a long-term inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the body's healthy tissue. It usually presents in the teens or twenties of the patients. The most common symptoms experienced by patients include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, delayed growth in young children, weight loss, fever, and low hemoglobin level. Some patients also experience non-intestinal symptoms such as arthritis, kidney stones, urinary tract complications, and fistulas. At Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, HSR Layout, the diagnosis of Crohn's disease begins with a complete history and physical examination. Your doctor will then send you for some diagnostic tests that will help confirm the diagnosis of Crohn's disease. Some of the tests include computed tomography (CT) scan, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, double-contrast barium enema x-rays, and small bowel series. Your doctor at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, HSR Layout, will choose a treatment for you depending on the severity of the disease and aim to suppress the active disease and prevent it from becoming active again.
