TOP MEDICAL SPECIALITIES OFFERED BY NARAYANA MULTISPECIALTY HOSPITAL, JAIPUR • CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME TREATMENT • SHOULDER REPLACEMENT • ARTHROSCOPY • CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME TREATMENT Carpal tunnel syndrome is a disease that causes pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand and wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by narrowing of the carpal tunnel, a tube in the wrist. This causes pressure on the median nerve and tendons inside the carpal tunnel, making them swell. This, in turn, cuts off the sensation in the thumb, index, and middle finger, and part of the ring finger. There are multiple risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome. People who do activities or jobs involving the repetitive use of fingers are at high risk for developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Some other risk factors include pregnancy, hypothyroidism, diabetes, wrist fracture, dislocation, hand and wrist deformity, and joint diseases such as gout and rheumatoid arthritis. If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, you may experience pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand and wrist. You may also notice difficulty using the hand for small tasks, like handling small objects, writing, or typing on the computer keyboard. If you have any symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, you should consult a doctor at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur. Your doctor will discuss your symptoms, take a medical history and perform a relevant examination. He or she will also perform two clinical tests called the Tinel's sign and Phalen test. You will then be sent for x-rays of the wrists and a test called electromyography (EMG) which is a nerve conduction study. After confirming the diagnosis, your doctor will recommend some non-surgical treatments such as wearing a wrist splint at night and taking over-the-counter pain medication for pain. If your symptoms aren't resolved in a few days to weeks, you might be given cortisone injections in the carpal tunnel to relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms still persist, your doctor might recommend a surgical procedure that will be performed as an outpatient procedure. • SHOULDER REPLACEMENT Shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure that involves removal of the damaged areas of the shoulder and replacement with artificial parts. This procedure is indicated when the patient has unresolved pain and impaired mobility due to arthritis, avascular necrosis, or fracture of the shoulder joint. If you have pain and decreased mobility of the shoulder joint, you should consult a doctor at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur. Your doctor will gather information related to your condition and perform a physical examination. If he or she thinks that you are fit for the surgery, a date will be set for the procedure. Before the procedure, general or regional anesthesia will be administered, which will help you get numb and have a painless surgery. The orthopedic surgeon will then replace the damaged shoulder joint's head shaped like a ball with a metal ball. He or she might also put a plastic surface on the socket of the shoulder, also known as a glenoid. This whole procedure will take around 2 hours. After completion of the procedure, you will be shifted to a recovery room for a few hours. Once you get stable, you will be moved to your hospital room, where you will stay for 2 to 3 days after surgery. • ARTHROSCOPY Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that helps visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. In arthroscopy, the surgeon makes a small incision in the patient's skin and inserts a small-sized instrument called the arthroscope that contains a camera and system that helps illuminate and magnify the structures inside the joint. The camera attached with the arthroscope displays the image inside the joint on the television screen. This helps the surgeon to see the interior of the joint through the small incision. The surgeon can then determine the type or extent of the injury and repair the problem right there, if necessary. The doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur use arthroscopy to diagnose and treat various joint diseases of the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist. Their doctor will also answer your questions related to your medical history, perform a physical examination, and order some X-rays. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scan might also be required. On the day of the procedure, you will be given anesthesia by injecting a numbing agent. The anesthesia can be local, regional, or general. The surgeon will then make one small incision to introduce the viewing device inside the joint. The surgeon might make additional small cuts at different places around the joint to insert surgical tools for joint repair. After the procedure, one or two stitches will be made to close the incision, and you will be moved to a room to recover before going home. Before discharge, your doctor will give you medicines to relieve pain and inflammation and ask you to follow up in a few days.
