However, previously, there was a lack of understanding of the relationship between those two. By studying the epicanthal fold, epicanthoplasty and double eyelid surgery, I was able to invent a new surgical procedure that uses a new evolution theory. Only until ten years ago, there were not enough medical studies studying epicanthal folds, and epicanthoplasty was a very restrictive surgery that only very few clinics performed. However, now, the concept of Asian blepharoplasty is changing to “structural double eyelid surgery”, which is the combination of epicanthoplasty and double eyelid surgery. It’s becoming understood that epicanthoplasty is not separate from double eyelid surgery and instead a part of it. In the past, it was thought that Asian eyelids are genetically different from those of other races. In fact, Asian eyelids were thought to be a congenital abnormality. However, it was hard to explain the various different shapes of double eyelids and epicanthal folds of Asians with these theories, and it was even harder to perform the surgical methods that applied these theories. Dr. Kwon said, “The fact that the theory on epicanthal folds comes from a hypothesis made in the 1830’s, which is before Darwin’s evolution theory, and that many papers published at the time have many errors in current medical viewpoint made the theory look unconvincing. Looking at the research of currently advancing fields like anatomy, bio-evolution, genetics and anthropology, I concluded that the Asian eyelids can be explained from an evolutionary standpoint”. Dr. Kwon explains that from his surgical experience, his structural double eyelid surgery based on devolutional concept, which is the combination of double eyelid surgery and epicanthoplasty, results in more natural-looking Asian eyes.
