    Overview

It is not enough to have bigger eyes and more defined eyelids. One should also concentrate on the formation or expansion of their love bands. The protrusion or "puffiness" of the lower eyelids is referred to as love bands. Pretarsal fullness refers to the quantity of skin that protrudes from the bottom part of your eyelids. Having large love bands will draw attention to one's eyes by giving them a soft and feminine appearance. Furthermore, it would make the eyes appear larger and more pronounced.

    What is Love Band Surgery?

    Love Band Surgery Definition

These lovely eye bags are known as love bands. They are not the same as the unsightly under-eye bags that we are all too familiar with, which give you a dull and older appearance owing to aging and exhaustion. The horizontal protrusion of flesh at the lower eyelid immediately below the eyelashes that is enhanced when one smiles is referred to as a love band. The prominence of love bands makes one's eyes appear softer, younger, and more feminine.

A love band, also known as an eye love band, is known as an aegyo-sal in South Korea, which translates to "cute skin." This is a cosmetic surgery that mimics the fullness of a newborn's lower eyelids to improve their look. The position of these lower eyelid folds distinguishes them from eye bags. A love band is seen directly under the lashes, whereas eye bags are restricted to the tear ducts beneath the eyelids.

When smiling, having an aegyo-sal gives off a young and friendly aspect. However, not everyone is born with love bands. This is why some people, particularly Koreans and other Asians with flat lower eyelids, choose for the treatment. This has gained popularity not just in Korea, but also in other nations such as the United States, where there are a significant number of Asians residing in the region.

The filler approach (temporary), fat grafting (semi-permanent), and the application of the Acellular Dermal Matrix can all be utilized to create a love band in the lower eyelid (permanent). The patient has the option of selecting which treatment to utilize based on their preferences for the recovery duration and the durability of the outcome.

    Lower eyelid Anatomy

    Lower eyelid Anatomy

The lower eyelid is made up of three tissue layers called lamellae. There are three layers: the outside layer (skin), the middle layer (muscle and fascia), and the inner lamellar layer. (mucosa) Changes occur in all eyelid layers from childhood through old age, with the skin being the most visible. In youth, the lower eyelid skin is tight and wrinkle-free, with a roll of tissue just behind the lashes. The orbicularis muscle's thickness is responsible for the linear puffiness under the lashes. Because some persons are thicker than others, the size of this roll varies greatly.

When we are younger, this muscle roll is bigger and causes the skin to be taut, with less wrinkles. However, as we age, the orbicularis muscle thins and the skin sags, giving the region beneath the eye a sunken appearance. In certain cultures (for example, Asian), having a pronounced under eyelid roll is linked with youth and attractiveness. Its importance in Western civilizations is seen as less artistically significant. Love band surgery is a procedure that augments the lower eyelid region. It is meant to simulate the youthfulness that occurs naturally in the skin right below the eyelashes. In Asia, it is also known as Aegyo Sal, which translates as ae (love), gyo (beautiful), and sal (skin)

    Where is the Love Band?

    Love Band Location

The areas of your eyes directly below your eyes contain a particular muscle called "love bands." Depending on the size, these love bands diminish the appearance of wrinkles beneath the eyes and give the region a youthful and smooth appearance. People with smaller love bands may appear to be older than they are.

Natural love bands are most commonly formed by the orbicularis muscle, which is located directly under the eyelashes. It's a sphincter that wraps around your eyelids, and when you consciously tighten it, your eyes close. It's also known as the orbicularis roll.

How to get Eye Love Bands?

    eye love bands

There are several techniques to make love bands beneath your eyes. Start with the least intrusive options:

    1. Makeup may be used to emphasize the lower lid contours and produce a lighter glow under the eyes. Some makeup artists can do this extremely effectively, and it seems three-dimensional.
    2. Adhesives and tapes can be used to make love bands, much as they may be used to make upper eyelid wrinkles.
    3. Restylane and other injectable hyaluronic acid gel fillers can be injected with a small needle to plump up the under-eye roll to resemble a love band that can last a year or more.
    4. Graft material (such as AlloDerm) can be inserted in the region of the love band by making one tiny incision at each end of the band. This is a more long-term solution.
    5. Fat injections can be used to fill in the love band with fat cells from another section of your body. The permanency of fat injections is less predictable than that of alternatives 3 and 4, yet fat is your own live tissue.

If you don't currently have a love band but want one, I recommend starting with a non-permanent solution (such as tape or filler injections) before moving on to a permanent one to ensure you enjoy the look of a love band for your eyes.

    Filler method

    Filler method

Skin often shrinks in soft tissue (Hyaluronic acid or collagen) as it ages owing to a variety of factors such as ultraviolet rays or natural phenomena. Because the skin has wrinkled or lost volume, it is required to compensate for the shortage with a substance known as filler.

Under-eye filler/love bag is a cosmetic plastic surgery that involves injecting fillers such as Restylane Lidocaine or Yvoire Lidocaine of Hyaluronic acid into the area below the eye, resulting in little bruises with no discomfort. It just takes a few minutes (5-10 minutes) for a patient to resume regular life.

Advantages of love band filler treatment

    • It can be finished in a short period of time through a simple injection.
    • There are almost no side effects from the treatment >6h
    • There are almost no side effects from the treatment
    • No worry about the scars left as it is done with simple injection
    • It can last 6-18 months, depending on individual characteristics and products used.

Who is a Good Candidate for Love Band Surgery?

We recommend love band surgery to:

    • Those who want to look younger through a simple procedure.
    • Those who look older because of dark circles.
    • Those who want to remove the fine lines and wrinkles under their eyes.
    • Those who want to have a cute and youthful look.
    • Eye surgery

As people age, the muscles behind their eyes lose strength, and their skin loses its elasticity. If the love bands are less than necessary, the region beneath the eyes may appear sunken. The love band surgery eliminates this age-related effect completely. This can be accomplished with techniques such as AlloDerm grafting or filler injection.

    Love Band Surgery Procedure

    Love Band Surgery Procedure

The love band technique can be performed alone under local anaesthetic or IV sedation, although it is most usually performed in conjunction with other surgeries under general anesthesia. Making two little incisions at opposite ends of the desired roll effect is how the procedure is done. In the lateral canthal skin crease, a 5mm skin incision is performed, followed by a 3mm horizontal incision on the medial or inside side of the desired roll. With little scissors or an elevator, a subcutaneous tunnel is created between the two incisions.

The Alloderm graft is approximately 3.5mm tall in the center, with tapering ends. Once thoroughly hydrated, it is normally recommended to trim the bottom edge using scissors. Make the graft longer than desired, and then clip the ends after implantation.

In my experience, utilizing a suture technique to draw the graft through is the easiest way to pass it through. The protruding ends can then be clipped prior to closure, ensuring that the graft is completely buried behind the skin closure. To minimize corneal contact, rapid dissolving sutures with extremely short medial ends are employed.

There is also the issue of Alloderm graft persistence, which has a poor track record in the lips. However, my experience with the eyelids has been different, maybe because it is a less dynamic structure with a considerably bigger graft-recipient site size ratio.

A love band may be made by a licensed plastic surgeon in 30 minutes to an hour. Depending on the treatment used, the patient is given local anaesthetic or topical anesthesia before the surgery begins.

    Filler method

    1. Your doctor will apply topical anesthesia to the under-eye area where the filler will be injected.
    2. They then use a syringe containing the HA filler and inject it in the under-eye area just below the under eyelid.
    3. An aegyo-sal is visibly seen right after the procedure and may have swelling that will only last for 2-3 days.

    Fat grafting

    1. They provide the patient local anaesthetic and, if required, combine it with IV sedative.
    2. Liposuction is then used to remove fat from the abdomen, hips, buttocks, or thighs.
    3. They next put the obtained fats in a centrifuge to separate fat cells.
    4. Purified fat cells are then injected into the patient's lower eyelid using a syringe.
    5. The swelling will be evident after the treatment but it will go down in 2-3 days.

    Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM)

    1. Before beginning the treatment, the doctor gives the patient local anaesthetic with sedative.
    2. They then mark the location of the incision so that it may be used as a guide during surgery.
    3. They create a 2-3mm incision in the bottom region of the eyes.
    4. The doctor next inserts and fixes the artificial dermis graft.
    5. They suture the incision with 2-3 stitches once the artificial dermis has been inserted in the right location.
    6. The swelling will be gone after 2-3 days, and the incision will heal within two weeks.

    Love Band Surgery Recovery

The length of recuperation following a love band surgery is determined by the procedure employed. After the procedure, there will be swelling and maybe bruising, regardless of the treatment used. This usually lasts two to three days. It may take a week or two for surgical wounds to heal entirely. If necessary, the doctor will provide you with prescribed oral pain medicine that will help you feel better once you leave the clinic.

If you used a filler approach, you can return to work the next day, but you must avoid intense activity for a day. If you underwent fat grafting or ADM, you may be recommended to take a week off from work and strenuous activity while the surgical region heals.

Side effects of the love band filler treatment

Filler treatments are often not a risky operation. However, there are no therapies that are completely free of negative effects. Bruises, swelling, hemorrhage (bleeding), soreness, muscle weakness, rashes, and other side effects are common with filler treatments.
