Dr. Vojtech Melenovsky, CSc. holds significant positions as the Deputy Head of the Research Clinic and Head of the Heart Failure Department. His journey in the medical field began with his graduation from the esteemed 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague in 1994. Dr. Melenovsky initially worked at the III. internal clinic of the General University Hospital in Prague, focusing on metabolism and nutrition before directing his attention towards cardiology. It was during his time at this clinic that he obtained specialized qualifications in internal medicine and cardiology. Furthermore, he successfully defended his candidate scientific work, which delved into endothelial dysfunction and risk factors associated with atherosclerosis. Driven by his passion for research, Dr. Melenovsky embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, in 2002. There, under the guidance of Prof. David Kass, he conducted research on cardiovascular aging. Simultaneously, he also contributed to cardiovascular aging research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH-NIA) in Baltimore, working alongside Prof. Edward Lakatta. The invaluable experience gained during his time in the United States equipped him with a broadened perspective on cardiac pathophysiology. Returning to the Czech Republic in 2005, Dr. Melenovsky became an integral part of the IKEM Cardiology Department, assuming the role of Deputy Head for Science and Research. His dedication to advancing medical knowledge led him to pursue a Fulbright Foundation scholarship in 2012-2013. During this period, he undertook a one-year internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, further enriching his expertise. In 2013, Dr. Melenovsky accomplished a significant milestone in his academic career by completing his habilitation at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. His habilitation thesis, focused on heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, showcased his expertise in the field of internal medicine. Eventually, in 2022, he was appointed Professor of Internal Medicine at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, solidifying his status as an accomplished academic and practitioner. Since 2013, Dr. Melenovsky has assumed the leadership of the heart failure department within the Cardiology Department. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he has devoted his efforts to develop an interdisciplinary research program that explores various aspects of the pathophysiology of chronic heart failure. Collaborating with esteemed institutions such as the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, and BIOCEV, Dr. Melenovsky's research endeavors have expanded the frontiers of medical knowledge. Dr. Melenovsky is an esteemed member of professional societies including the Czech Society of Cardiology, the Heart Failure Association (European Society of Cardiology), the American Heart Association, and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. His contributions to the medical field are evident in his impressive publication record, comprising 166 articles in international medical journals, which have garnered over 20,000 citations. With an h-index of 48 (WOS), Dr. Melenovsky's impact and influence on the scientific community are substantial. Additionally, he actively participates as an investigator in several IGA and GAČR grants, as well as the IKEM research plan, further cementing his commitment to advancing medical research.
